In 2014, as I hurried to my gate at Boston Logan Airport, I stopped at Hudson News to pick out a book. I grabbed a copy of 13 Hours for the flight. At the time, I knew little about the events in Benghazi. I recently graduated college, and was nearly a decade away from joining the military. By the time I landed and regained cell service, I was eagerly searching for everything I could learn about the story. It became more personal when I learned that Glenn Doherty had grown up in Winchester, Massachusetts, just next to my hometown of Arlington. This profound story, combined with my family’s history of military service and an overarching desire for purpose and adventure, ultimately led me into a recruiter’s office to pursue an Army Special Forces contract. I traded business casual for camouflage, morning lattes for MREs, and a warm bed for the cold forest floor.
